SAVN, INC. FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
Gina Orton, M.D.
Gina Orton, M.D., grew up in the Bronx borough of New York City. With the protection and encouragement of a large loving family she excelled in her school work. Dr. Orton attended the Bronx High School of Science, Yale College, and Hahnemann University Medical School, where she earned her degree in medicine. Touched by the moving stories shared by patients, Dr. Orton chose psychiatry as her specialty. She completed her internship and residency in psychiatry at the Indiana University Medical Center and completed a Forensic Fellowship.
More than anything Dr. Orton wanted to use her medical knowledge and faith to minister to those overwhelmed by painful childhoods and violent experiences. She worked in the prison system and the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she gained knowledge in healing the trauma of abuse, sexual violation, and war through caring interventions, counseling, and prayer. She was often able to assist persons in relinquishing violent and suicidal behaviors.
Dr. Orton worked with the FBI for many years developing crisis intervention and resiliency programs for law enforcement personnel and their families. She has been at the forefront of efforts to reduce the stigma of seeking mental health treatment. Dr. Orton provides presentations and training nationally and internationally to community, government, faith-based, and law enforcement entities on mental health and wellness, resiliency, suicide and violence prevention, healing, and wholeness. Dr. Orton started the Foundation for Healing, which contributes to organizations battling poverty and hunger. She is dedicated to identifying the causes of violence in the United States and finding long-term solutions.
